Salmon Fishing Tips And Techniques

The Coho Salmon
The Coho salmon or silver has a scientific name of Oncorhynchus kisutch. It's coloration is dark blue back with silver sides. It is a Pacific salmon and can be found in places like Alaska, Japan, California, to name a few.

Silver salmon average 20" to 30" in length and are usually 7 to 11 pounds in weight. The adult Coho will spend anywhere from 1 to 2 years in the ocean before migrating to spawn. It's main food source will be insects, plankton and fish and it's natural predators are sea lions and seals. Coho salmon are the backbone of the commercial fishing industry, so you would have to list man as a predator as well, just not a natural one.

These salmon will travel hundreds of miles to find their home water to spawn in. By the time the male and female arrive, a transformation will have taken place. The male will have a hooked nose or kype with big teeth and the female will have a hooked nose and both will be much darker in color. The female finds the right spot for her nest and lays a few thousand eggs. The male then covers the eggs with milt. Both salmon will expire shortly but the many thousand eggs will develop through the winter and hatch in the spring to hopefully survive and carry on the Coho salmon species.

Some rivers in the United States that have Coho salmon are the following:

Salmon River in Pulaski, New York
Kenai River in Alaska
Rogue River in Oregon
Columbia River in Washington
