The Chinook Salmon
The Chinook salmon or King is the largest of the Pacific salmon species and has a scientific name of Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. Alaska has chosen it for it’s state fish and it's a prized catch of anglers everywhere. It can also be found in California, Canada, Russia and even Asia and has been introduced to the waters of the Great Lakes.

Chinooks have an average life span of 5 years and usually average 30" to 36” long, reaching a typical weight of 10 to 50 pounds but have been weighed in at 130 pounds and over 50" long. The Chinook salmon can remain in the ocean for 1 to 5 years and sometimes longer before it starts it’s migration to spawn. It's diet consists of insects, crustaceans and other fish.

Like the Atlantic salmon, the king returns to the waters where it was born so it can spawn. Unlike the Atlantic, it will die shortly after spawning. The natural enemies of this fish are bears, eagles, sharks and whales and let's not forget man.
